Nba: Is Being A Team Leader Overrated In Basketball?

By NBA Rumors Posted in: NBA Players

MJ, Bird, Kobe, Duncan, and all the other champions wouldn’t be anywhere without their team. So apparently you have to have a ring to be considered an all-time great? Where would all these players be without their original teams? Would they be champions or would they just be another player like “LeBron”? Kobe wouldn’t be anything if it wasn’t for his team. When can you get through your thick skulls that championships doesn’t prove that a player is better than another. So is Jason Terry better than Charles Barkley? Is Chauncey Billups better than Allen Iverson? A team leader gets most of the credit for a teams championships but knowing that it was an actual team effort. Thoughts?

I sort of answered this in another question, but the bulk fits here so here I goes:
Being a team leader is not overrated. i would argue that it is under appreciated. Sometimes the Team leader doesn’t have the best stats on the team but can ignite his team to victory. Jason Terry was not even a starter last year, but the man came in and got his team fired up.
Ok, I know a lot of fans like to compare player resumes and stats and bring in RINGS.
Stats are an Individual’s accomplishment while rings are a team’s accomplishment.
The problem is the fans want to definitively label a player the best of the best, so when they compare stats they also bring in the rings to the table and then the argument gets twisted. Here’s why…
Rings are important as it shows you are part of a championship team. The goal of every team is to win championships. So rings represents being on the best team that year. It doesn’t mean the individual was necessarily the best, but that that the team that individual played on was the best that year. So a ring means that player was PART of a championship. Some players played a larger PART than others.
You can’t judge players by just rings because…
Luke Walton of the LA Lakers has TWO rings. Lebron has ZERO. Is Luke better than Lebron?
Robert Horry has SEVEN rings. Is Horry better than MJ, Magic, Kareem, or Kobe?
I believe you can use rings in an argument when you compare two similar players career stats who are no longer active (Point Guard Vs Point Guard) and you need a tie-breaker. This is important as players that are active aren’t done yet. It is also important to factor their position. If you are comparing active centers VS retire point guards that’s apples and oranges.
We can, however, judge NBA Teams by rings because rings are a team accomplishment.

MJ made Pippen,Grant,Kerr,Rodman all better players
Kobe made Pau,Bynum,Lamar,Ariza all better players
Duncan made Manu,Parker,Bowen all better players
    Chauncey made the pistons better
Lebron just made his teamates worst
Mo williams,Antawn Jamison,Larry Hughes,Big Z,Carlos Boozer,Joe Smith,JJ Hickson,Anderson Varajao.. They all had potential at one point or another. Lebron just never figured out how to bring out the best in his teamates.

  3. Leo Laker™ Says

Winning a ring is a team effort, but remove the star player from the team and you do not have a ring.
    Would Worthy be Showtime?
Would Pippen get two three peats?
Would Pau lead his team to a back to back?
The answer to all of those questions is no.
The Player needs a Team, the Team needs a Player.
    Simple as that.

Are you insinuating Jason Terry was the leader for Dallas Mavs?
Oh and Chauncey is better than A.I.
Better passer, defender, better 3pt shooter. You get the point
EDIT: LOL! No the primary reason Heat lost was because of Lebron. What kind of superstar averages 2.2 pts in the 4th quarter???

  5. Brett Favre † Says

No, not at all. You need other players, but you aren’t going to be able to win if you don’t have someone who can take over and lead and motivate a team.

    Yes.
